Coffee is categorized into many types based on their region of growth, method of preparation, style of roasting, flavors added etc. Geographically coffee is categorized as Robusta and Arabica.

Robusta, grown at lower altitudes has a high yield and accounts for 30% of the world’s production. Giving a strong flavor, Robusta is usually used for making instant coffees. It is mostly grown in regions of central and western Africa, Brazil, India and certain parts of Malaysia.
Arabica is grown at much higher altitudes and accounts for 70% of the world’s total production though its yield is less. It has strong aroma and has a much lesser caffeine content than Robusta. It is primarily grown in regions of India, Central and southern America and eastern Africa.

Based on preparation, coffee can be divided into numerous types, each characteristic of the people and the region in which it’s being prepared. The most common recipe is coffee with milk or often referred as Café’ e latte in Italian. Many recipes are devised altering the amount of espresso and milk. These include Café mocha with two-thirds of milk and one-third espresso, Cappuccino prepared with milk, steamed lesser than in café latte and other Italian varieties like Frappuccino, Mochasippi, Cortdo, Macchiato, Affogato and Café Americano.

Other famous Coffee recipes include the Portugal hot drink Galao, the Greek frappe, the Indian Filter coffee, Hongkong’s Yuanyang, Ca Phe Sua Da in Vietnam.

Coffees like instant coffee, known for their quick preparation and decaffeinated coffee have been steadily gaining popularity. Depending on the amount of caffeine content coffee is classified as Drip coffee, Espresso, Instant, Decaf brewed, and Decaf instant. Cold Coffee, coffee flavored candies and coffee flavored Ice creams have been recently turning heads.
